GLR's first gravel ride out of Oregon, IL.  We head west to the Mississippi River and back to Oregon on the nicest gravel that Illinois has to offer.  This should be a great event for anyone who enjoys a fun day on the bike.   This is NOT a RUSA event.  There are no controls or time limits.  You are free to stop where ever you would like and proceed at whatever pace you like.  It's a good idea to bring lights, reflective gear and other safety gear just in case.  You may find yourself a bit late after enjoying the day.

The ride will feature:

  1. BYOS (Bring your own Start) - You may start at any time you like from 6:00 AM on Saturday until 10:00 AM on Saturday.  You must bring lights and reflective gear.
  2. Self Reporting for you finish - There are NO controls on this ride.  Instead, you can start from ANY point on the route and finish at the same place.  On your confirmation email, there will be a link for uploading an RWGPS or Strava URL (for Strava, your ride must be public).  You must upload this within 24 hours of the finish and text the organizer on your finish.
  3. You may ride as much of the route as you like.  If you don't finish the entire route, you may abandon and upload your GPS URL for partial credit.
  4. Social Distancing and masks worn indoors (if you stop) are MANDATORY.  While riding in pairs is fine, large groups are prohibited.

There will be a mandatory pre-ride Zoom Meeting for all participants the night before the ride to go over safety and any last minute route information.

Fantastic route!!!

My first gravel road ride of any considerable distance The 50/50 mix was nice to go back and forth.

Newbie experience:

The gravel roads were in good condition and mostly easy to ride, almost like pavement. There wasn’t any washboard that I could remember. However, there were sections that had larger rocks on top of the hard pack which felt like riding on marbles. At times the rougher sections were pushing me off the road crown towards the shoulder. Needed to use the brakes on some gravel descents to maintain steering control (hard work on the climb and no joy on the way down). Did alright on the gravel climbs except for the early Chunkey Monkey where I did get off to walk about 30 feet.

Nice temperatures with my 9:04 am start and 7:45 pm finish. The headwinds to Savanna were strong and unrelenting, but nice to have some tailwind on the way back.

Thanks for the route and setting up the ride.

Most excellent course. Just the right amount of "Mixed" surface. More gravel would have made the distance this early in the Midwest season, much less enjoyable.
